Alfred Hartley Hurst (Service No. 68583)
(1895 - 1978)
Private Alfred Hartley Hurst lived in Laverton, with his parents, Alfred William Hurst and Rosetta Ann Hurst, and his six siblings in about 1917, just prior to Alfred enlisting into the Army towards the end of WW1. Private Alfred Hurst was on one of the last ships to leave Australia and did not make it to the Western Front as his ship was turned back at Durban, South Africa with news that the war had ended. But it was not all plain sailing back to Australia for Alfred and others on this ship with the dreaded Spanish Flu taking its toll on many of the troops including Private Hurst.
