Congratulations to the Laverton Bowling Club on their fifty year celebrations. In 1974, Cyril Hooper, the local Laverton newsagent, remarked on the lack of bowling facilities within the area to Senior Sergeant Des Fitzpatrick, in charge of the Laverton Police station. This got Des thinking and he called a public meeting of anyone interested establishing a bowls club. Shortly after, this meeting, an interim committee was formed and by 1975 the club was formed and an official committee was elected. Members of the inaugural committee were – Des Fitzpatrick (President), Keith Bartlett (Secretary), and Cyril Hooper (Treasurer). Werribee Shire council made the land available and supplied a R.A.A.F hut that formed the first club house. The club first commenced competitive bowling in 1978 and gained new clubrooms and a second green during 1987. And as they say “the rest is history’.
The club has had many outstanding people that have supported the club over the years including – Des Fitzpatrick, Jean Fitzpatrick, Rob Merlo, Jean Hanmer, Arthur Laidlaw, Ken Schmidt, Dot Williams, Maurie Kitson, Bill Skilton, Kathy Kirkpatrick, Tom Stafford, Jim Whiteside, Ron Hewson, Barry Gilham, Doug Tudhope, Corrie Dingemans, Bob Hendry, Hank Spierenburg, Ross Carruthers, Doug Forsyth, Frank Smith, Rick Gilmore, Barbara Gilmore, John Gibbens, Warrick Smalley, Brian Moulang, Cath Johnston, Mary Pond and Doreen Keane.
They say that a Community that plays together, stays together. This is certainly true of the Laverton Bowling Club.
