SUMMARY:Truganina Explosive Reserve - Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever travelled along Queen Street through Altona\, heading towards Altona Meadows\, and wondered what is behind that long corrugated iron fence? Well\, now is your chance to find out by taking a guided tour\, and learning all about the history of the reserve and the plants and animals that reside there. \nAltona’s Truganina Explosives Reserve is situated at 276 Queen Street Altona at western end of Doug Grant Reserve. The Explosives Reserve was established by the State Government in 1900 for the storage and handling of commercial explosives. \nThe manufacture of explosives\, mainly gelignite and dynamite had operated in Deer Park since 1873 and was predominately used in the quarrying and mining industries. These explosives were originally stored in specially designed buildings (magazines) along the Maribyrnong River\, upstream from Footscray. With the growth and development of Footscray it was felt that the storage and handling of explosive material should be moved to a more isolated location. In 1900 a site was selected in Altona which had both a water frontage and it remoteness from populated area. At this time the population in Altona was approximately 50 residents and a total of 15 occupied dwellings. The Truganina Explosives Reserve operated until May 11\, 1962 when it was closed and all remaining explosive materials were transferred to Point Wilson. \nTruganina Explosive Reserve is open for you to visit and learn more of the history of Altona on the first Sunday of each month from 1 pm until 4 pm\, so after enjoying Devonshire Tea at the Altona Homestead why not take the short drive further along Queen Street and explore another aspect of the history of Altona.

We also have fresh lemonade available for those who don’t drink tea or coffee. \nAre bookings necessary? Yes\, we have limited seating and have three one hour sessions – 10.00 until 11.00\, 11.30 until 12.30 and 1.00 until 2.00. Bookings are not required for children 3 years & under. \nWhat if it rains? We have tables inside the Homestead and under the courtyard verandah. \nWhat if I’m gluten intolerant? We also have ‘gluten free’ scones available\, just let us know when you book. \nIs there an additional cost to enter the Homestead? No\, it is free so after you enjoy Devonshire tea please take time to wander through the Homestead. There is always an Exhibition to view\, a journey into history to enjoy or take time out to talk to one of our volunteers about Altona and the Homestead. \n

DESCRIPTION:BOOK NOW \nJoin us at our beautiful bluestone Altona Homestead on the first Sunday of the month (March\, April then September to December) from 10.00 am-2.00 pm and enjoy our famous Devonshire Tea. \nWhat is our Devonshire Tea? Our Devonshire tea comes with two fresh home-made scones\, home-made mixed berry jam\, cream and your choice of a pot of coffee or a pot of tea\, all for $10.00 a serve. We also have fresh lemonade available for those who don’t drink tea or coffee. \nAre bookings necessary? Yes\, we have limited seating and have three one hour sessions – 10.00 until 11.00\, 11.30 until 12.30 and 1.00 until 2.00. Bookings are not required for children 3 years & under. \nWhat if it rains? We have tables inside the Homestead and under the courtyard verandah. \nWhat if I’m gluten intolerant? We also have ‘gluten free’ scones available\, just let us know when you book. \nIs there an additional cost to enter the Homestead? No\, it is free so after you enjoy Devonshire tea please take time to wander through the Homestead. There is always an Exhibition to view\, a journey into history to enjoy or take time out to talk to one of our volunteers about Altona and the Homestead. \n
